Hospital Information System and PACS

SA-HIS, the largest selling Hospital Software in Kerala is soon to have a PACS module integrated from a world leader.

PACS stands for Picture Archiving and Communication System. The system comprise of Computers, network devices dedicated to the storage, retrieval, distribution and presentation of medical images.

Medical images stands for the various image results from Ultrasound, magnetic resonance, Positron Emission tomography (PET), endoscopy, mammograms etc.

DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) act as a general format for storing the Medical images mentioned above.

DICOM enables the integration of scanners, servers, workstations, printers, and network hardware from multiple manufacturers into a picture archiving and communication system (PACS).

DICOM differs from other data formats in that it groups information into data sets. That means that a file of a chest X-Ray image, for example, actually contains the patient ID within the file, so that the image can never be separated from this information by mistake.

A DICOM data object consists of a number of attributes, including items such as name, ID, etc., and also one special attribute containing the image pixel data.

Advantages of PACS

• Replaces the Hard copies of Medical results onto Digital formats
• Remote access to the resources
• Acts as a single point of access for images
• Integration with HIS (Hospital Information Systems)/ RIS (Radiology Information systems)
• Data or images that are saved can be tagged with the patient identifiers to reduce the chances of errors.
